What
does "Jaipur" mean?
The word "Jaipur" refers to the technology to be used at the
Centre: an appropriate technology of the manufacture of limbs for the
rural areas, developed in Jaipur City, India, by Dr. P. K. Sethi.
The advantages of the Jaipur Limb are the following:
-
it is strong, durable and water
proof, permits walking on uneven ground and in wet fields;
-
it can be worn barefoot or with
shoes;
-
it matches skin colour, has a
lifelike appearance;
-
utilises locally available
materials, labour and skills;
-
it is low cost and can be fitted
rapidly;
-
the production process and
technology is easily transferable;
-
mobile units can make it possible
to fit limbs in the remotest areas.
Why in Mandlakaze?
Gaza Province was selected in co-ordination with the Ministry of
Health. It is one of the two provinces that do not have an orthopaedic
centre yet Mandlakaze was chosen as it is a MRC pilot district. Many
amputees live in the rural areas. Their identification, transport to
the existing orthopaedic centres in the province capitals, the
follow-up, the maintenance and repair of prostheses has not been easy.
MPC intends to undertake an experience with taking the assistance
nearer the amputees, making use of its volunteer network.
